Lancôme Lip Idôle Squalane-12 Butterglow™ Hydrating Lip Balm Review: Luxury Lips at a Luxury Price
Here’s a polished, fun, Twilight Kaleidoscope-style review that keeps your honest experience front and center while making it more engaging for readers.
Sometimes a product’s reviews convince me to throw caution (and my budget) to the wind. That’s exactly what happened with the Lancôme Lip Idôle Squalane-12 Butterglow™ Hydrating Lip Balm. With its glowing five-star reviews and gorgeous packaging, I decided it was time for a little beauty splurge.
And splurge it definitely was. At $32 for just 0.1 oz, this tiny tube is giving luxury handbag prices in lip balm form.
First Impressions: Love at First Click

The packaging is absolutely stunning. It feels expensive, looks chic, and has a satisfying click when it closes that makes it feel a little extra special every time you use it.
The shade itself is what I would call a classic “your lips, but better” color. It’s subtle, soft, and perfect for everyday wear. If you’re someone who wants polished lips without looking overly done, Lancôme nailed that effortless look.
The formula is where this balm really shines. It’s incredibly hydrating, buttery smooth, and feels comfortable on the lips for hours. The texture immediately reminded me of some of the luxury lip products from YSL, which was one of the reasons it caught my attention in the first place.
There are so many great hydrating lip products on the market. I wrote about all of the lip launches in recent years.
The Not-So-Glamorous Side
As much as I enjoy using this balm, there are a couple of things keeping me from calling it perfect or even close.
First, the formula is extremely soft.
And while that softness feels amazing on the lips, it creates some issues inside the tube. Over time, the product shifts from side to side rather than staying neatly centered. I don’t leave it in a hot car. I don’t carry it around in the sun. Yet somehow, the balm still seems to migrate around the packaging.
Every time I twist it back down, I notice a little product collecting around the edges. It’s not a huge amount, but it is enough to be noticeable. If you don’t wipe it away, it ends up smearing on that gorgeous gold case. Suddenly your glamorous luxury balm starts looking a little less glamorous.
For a product at this price point, I expect better packaging performance.
The Scent Problem
Then there’s the fragrance. The scent isn’t overpowering, and thankfully it disappears quickly once applied. But it definitely has what I can only describe as an old-school Lancôme perfume vibe.
Think vintage department store beauty counter. It’s not quite the classic L’Oréal lip product scent, but it’s in that family with a slightly more floral twist. It’s light, but it’s there.
If you’re sensitive to fragrance or simply prefer unscented lip products, it’s something to keep in mind.
Is It Worth It?
Honestly? I like it. My lips feel hydrated. The formula is comfortable. The color is wearable. The packaging is beautiful. But I don’t think the experience quite matches the price tag.
When you’re paying $32 for 0.1 oz of product, every detail matters. The shifting formula, product loss around the tube, and vintage fragrance keep this from feeling like a flawless luxury purchase.
I’d happily use it up, but I’m not convinced I’d rush out to repurchase it. I am not even considering it to be honest.
Save Your Money: Comparable Alternatives
If you’re looking for a similar glossy, hydrating lip balm experience without the luxury price shock, these are worth a look:
Naturium Phyto-Glow Lip Balm
Price: Around $10 for 3.4 oz
Hydrating, smooth, and packed with nourishing ingredients. This lip balm is more of the old school lip product in a squeeze tube. Not luxury packaging. Although petal is a close color to the Lacome product. It delivers that luxury balm feel without the luxury wallet trauma.
Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm
Price: Around $24 for .5oz
Still a splurge, but you’ll generally get more product for your money. The scents are delicious, and the formula has developed a cult following. I would probably still pick Naturium lip product as you get more and the packaging is the same. luxury is your game, get this one.
Final Verdict
Twilight Kaleidoscope Rating: 2.75/5 – I put a lot on getting the full amount of product and this one just doesn’t do it.
The Lancôme Lip Idôle Butterglow Lip Balm is beautiful, hydrating, and undeniably luxurious. But between the tiny amount of product, the shifting formula, and the vintage floral scent, it feels more like an indulgence not a must-have.
If you’ve been eyeing it, you’ll probably enjoy it. Just know you’re paying a premium for the name and the experience as much as the formula itself.
Sometimes luxury isn’t worth your hard earned dollars.
