Some beauty products go viral, rack up millions of views, and somehow become “must‑haves”… even when the reviews tell a very different story. If you’ve ever splurged on a hyped (overhyped) product only to feel underwhelmed, you’re not alone. Today we’re breaking down popular beauty products that aren’t worth the money, why they fall short, and what performs better for less.

These insights are based on consistent low ratings, common customer complaints, and performance gaps—not just my personal preference. Also I have asked opinions of people from all ages on these products. The comments have been the same, not a product that should be viral or popular.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

My top disliked product, Tarte Shape Tape. I bought the hype and it wasn’t good. In my climate, it dried the heck out of my under eyes.

Am I doing something wrong? I had others use it. I watched videos on how others wear it. In real life, it didn’t work for me. It didn’t work for the people I had used it. The ages were from 25 to 70. Conclusion don’t always believe the hype.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealers

Why it is overhyped – heavy, drying formula that emphasizes fine lines. Can look cakes on mature or dry skin. Oxidizes on many skin tones.

I didn’t experience the oxidation. But reviewers did. I experienced all of the others.

I even purchased 3 of them in different shades. Nothing changed.

It took years to use this up and finally I just let my little niece use it for play makeup.

Better alternatives:

Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Full Coverage Concealer – $32.00

Sephora Collection Best Skin Ever Concealer – $18.00

NYX Professional Makeup Bare with me Concealer Serum – $11.00

Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base

Another product that I bought the hype. It was crap. The thick texture pills under most of my foundations. Now I own a lot of foundations. I tried it on at least 15 foundation. Three didn’t pill. Just three.

Most people don’t have 15 foundations to try with this stuff. Very disappointing. Definitely not a great primer. Not really a great moisturizer. There are many great moisturizer on the market.

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion $15.00 for 12 ounces is a good moisturizer. I have used this for years and years. Now, I don’t use it every day anymore. That doesn’t mean that it still isn’t a great moisturizer. Even though this product has been fairly overhyped over the years, there is a good reason. I would get that far before the Bobby Brown Face Base.

e.l.f. Lip Oils

These oils are friendly on the wallet. Still, not worth it. They are okay, not great. These lip oils are a thin formula that disappears quickly. Nourishment is minimal compared to other lip oils. A bit of a sticky finish and not a great shade selection.

My favorite lip oil that feels so luxurious Beauty Pie (BP) Collagen Lip Oils. These are $30.00 on Amazon but only $ if you are a BP member.

NYX Fat Oil Lip Drip

There are others more in more budget friendly price range that are better than these E.L.F. Lip Oils. I would try out NYX Fat Oil Lip Drip for around $10, you get a richer, smother lip oil. This lip oil also has last longer without the stickiness.

I have to quit giving you people sexy pictures of my hands. Lol!

This lip oil is so comfortable and rich feeling on the lips. For the money, this is one you need to try.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream

I know, I know. People love this brand. I like a few products from this brand, as they do listen to the consumer. That translates to some products that you want on the beauty market debut from this brand.

The problem with this Magic Cream is heavily fragrance and just basic ingredients. Most moisturizer will give you a “glow” when you first apply it. The price doesn’t justify that it is just a basic moisturizer.

I would give you alternatives but there are just so many. Basically, just choose something else. Anything else.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Most high priced mascaras are not worth the money. There is nothing revolutionary in the ingredients are formulas of mascaras to make them worth a high price point.

Still, do I love the Dior mascara or lancome or Mac Stack. Of course, I do. I just don’t buy them all of the time. Fully knowing that what I am paying is not worth it. I am buying for the experience not the product.

Even then I don’t purchase Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara. Cute name, great marketing and catchy packaging. That is what is has going for it. As a mascara it flakes throughout the day. Smudges easily and gets clumpy fairly quickly.

We all know the alternatives to this product. L’oreal Lash Paradise or Maybelline Sky High. Both are better.

Viral products and real world reviews

The beauty world is full of viral products, but popularity doesn’t always equal performance. By focusing on ingredients, wearability, and real‑world reviews, you can build a makeup bag that works harder without draining your wallet.

What other viral products are not worth it?

What have you tried that is’t worth the hype? Let me know. Maybe I will agree. Or even better I will afford spending my hard earned money on it.
