Kaleido Cosmetics Eyeliner: My Real Experience With a Dry, Disappointing Formula

The Eyeliner That Promised Magic… But Delivered a Mystery

There’s a particular kind of hope we carry into a new eyeliner—the quiet wish that this one will be the dependable, all‑day companion our over‑40 eyes deserve. A crisp line, a steady flick, a formula that doesn’t smudge into the soft folds time has gifted us. Kaleido Cosmetics’ Obsidian Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner certainly promises all of that: long‑lasting wear, a bold black finish, and a felt-tip applicator designed for precision. On paper, it reads like a dream.

And yet, sometimes beauty dreams evaporate the moment we twist open the cap.

A Brand Built on Color and Playfulness

Kaleido Cosmetics is known for its whimsical, color-forward approach to makeup—bright pigments, playful textures, and indie-brand charm. Their waterproof eyeliners, especially the Obsidian shade, are marketed as smudge-proof, long-wearing, and easy to apply. Prices vary depending on the retailer, but most listings fall between $8 and $20 for a full-size liquid liner.

On the surface, it’s an accessible price point—especially for those of us who love experimenting without committing to prestige-brand splurges.

But Here’s the Honest Truth…

I’ve purchased two of these eyeliners. Two chances. Two fresh boxes. And both times, the moment I opened them, I was met with… nothing. Dry as desert air. Not a hint of product. No glide, no pigment, no chance to test the waterproof claim. Just a felt tip that seemed unusually large—almost bulky—making me wonder if precision would have been a challenge even if the formula had been present.

There’s a particular disappointment that comes with unusable makeup. It’s not anger, exactly—it’s more like the sigh you let out when a book with a beautiful cover turns out to have blank pages. You want to love it. You’re ready to love it. But there’s simply nothing there to love.

it is important to note that this product has great reviews online. Not even 1 bad review. That is interesting. None? Has the comment section been altered on their website? Makeup is subjective and usually even for a fabulous product you get a few 1 star comments.

Why This Matters for Women Over 40

Our eyes have changed. The skin around them has softened, the lids may have grown more hooded, and the makeup we reach for needs to work with us, not against us. A dry eyeliner isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a product that fails at the very first step. And when the applicator feels oversized, it adds another layer of difficulty for mature eyes that benefit from slimmer, more controlled tips.

Would I Recommend It?

With two unusable liners in a row, I can’t offer a proper performance review—and I certainly can’t recommend purchasing it. There are too many reliable, beautifully formulated eyeliners out there to spend time coaxing life out of a dry tube.

If You’re Curious About the Brand…

Kaleido Cosmetics still offers other products that may be worth exploring, especially their colorful chameleon eyeliners and multi-shift formulas. But when it comes to the Obsidian Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, my experience has been consistent enough that I won’t be purchasing again.

Final Thoughts

Beauty after 40 is about joy, ease, and products that show up for us. This eyeliner didn’t. And that’s okay—because every disappointing product nudges us closer to the ones that truly shine.

If you’d like, I can help you find a dependable waterproof eyeliner that does deliver—something smooth, pigmented, and mature-eye friendly.
