Holiday skin prep isn’t what it used to be. Once upon a time, we could toss on a sheet mask an hour before a party and—poof—hydrated, plump, glowing. Now? Sheet masks still help (and yes, they absolutely earn their place in the day‑of holiday makeup prep), but they’re no longer the whole story. Our skin wants a little more planning, a little more intention, and honestly… a little more respect. So grab your calendar, because the glow-up starts 10 days before the event.

They settle into fine lines, exaggerate every crease, dull the complexion, and make foundation cling like it’s auditioning for a role it wasn’t cast in. We want the holiday lights to bounce off our skin beautifully—not highlight texture we didn’t invite to the party. Healthy, smooth skin looks incredible at every age, and the fastest way to get there is by clearing away those glow-blocking dead cells.

There are plenty of ways to do it, but peel pads have been my personal ride-or-die for years. Still, I’m never opposed to trying the new kid on the block. So today we’re comparing Dr. Dennis Gross Peel Pads with Prequel’s Multi-Acid Milk Peel lineup—and yes, I’ve been testing Prequel long enough to have real thoughts.

My OG Holiday Skin Prep
Dr. Dennis Gross peel pads are the skincare equivalent of slipping into a velvet dress — smoothing, refining, and instantly making you feel like the best version of yourself. Especially if you have been neglecting your skin, in favor of fantasy football, fall lawn cleanup or seasonal crafting. (I do almost every year).
Step 1 Ingredients (Exfoliating Pad): Glycolic acid, Salicylic Acid, Lactic acid, mandelic acid, Malic acid, citric acid, witch hazel, willow bark extract, green tea extract, chamomile extract, achillea extract, soy isoflavones, copper pca & zinc PCA and Glycerin.
I actually love everyone of these ingredients. I may do posts later for skin care acids and why I like them. Along with Copper GHK or Copper pca and Zinc. Lovely skin care ingredients. Glycerin the maturing skin friend for the whole winter. Okay, Let’s get back to what they do for this post.
How Step 1 Works
This is a 7-acid cocktail designed to break down dead skin cells, brighten dullness, smooth fine lines, clear pores, improve texture, prep skin for deeper absorption.
Glycolic and lactic acids exfoliate; salicylic acid clears pores; mandelic and malic acids refine texture; citric acid brightens; botanicals soothe. It’s the perfect “reset button” before holiday glam.

How Step 2 Works
This pad neutralizes the acids, calms the skin, and infuses it with antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients. It’s like a finishing serum in pad form — hydrating, firming, and restoring radiance.
Prequel Multi-Acid Milk Peel Wipes
The New Kid With the Milky Glow
Prequel’s wipes are gentler in feel but not in performance. They’re drenched in a milky solution with 15% multi-acid complex — glycolic, phytic, malic, mandelic, lactic — plus enzymes and squalane.

Going to be honest, there are some ingredients on this list that I not all that familiar. That doesn’t mean they are not good, just not as familiar.

It appears we are missing the salicylic acid for clears pores and citric acid for brightening. However, this product has enzymes instead. What are enzymes? Enzymes are tiny biological exfoliators that work like Pac‑Man for dead skin cells. Instead of dissolving bonds the way acids do, enzymes digest the dead, dull, flaky cells sitting on the surface of your skin.
That is just the surface of the ingredients, let’s take a closer look at the comparisons.
How They Compare to Dr. Dennis Gross Step 1
- Strength: Prequel uses a higher acid concentration (15% blend) vs. DDG’s multi-acid mix.
- Texture: Prequel is milky and cushioned; DDG is watery and sharp.
- Experience: Prequel feels gentler on application but is still potent; DDG feels more “clinical.”
- Results: Both brighten, smooth, and refine — DDG is more aggressive on pores and breakouts; Prequel is more hydrating and barrier-friendly.
If DDG Step 1 is a power peel, Prequel is a creamy resurfacing treatment. Both did the job in my opinion. If you have never used a skin care products with acids. Use once to twice a week don’t go wild because it is the holidays. These products do an exceptional job. To much of a good thing is still too much,
Prequel offers another version
Prequel Multi-Acid Milk Peel Solution
Prequel offers it in a liquid version of the wipes. Actually, I believe the solution came before the wipes. But it is the same formula as the wipes – just bottled. I purchased the peel solution before the wipes. I still have the bottled version. There is just so much more.
Price Comparison
The price for the prequel wipes are $20.00 for 12 wipes. Dr Dennis Gross (DDG) is $20.00 for 5 wipes. DDG has a part 2 to his wipes. You get two wipes in one package. Not the same ingredients on the 2nd but still 2. The solution is $23.00 for 4.6 oz. Clearly, the wipes are not the best deal in either brand. Wipes do have some advantages as in they are measured out and they are much more convenient for travel.
Does Prequel have a step 2?
Not exactly. Step 2 of Dr Dennis Gross is antioxidant-heavy (resveratrol, retinol, CoQ10). Prequel’s solution doesn’t include those anti-aging actives.
Prequel has a product that is hydrating and a peptide-rich moisturizer.
Prequel Half & Half Moisturizer
The Dewy Barrier Builder. This lightweight fluid moisturizer is ceramide-rich, peptide-rich, and perfect after acids.
Ingredients: Ceramide NP, AS, NS, EOP, AP, Hexapeptide-11, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Squalane, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Amino Acids (Serine, Alanine, Glycine, Threonine, Arginine, Proline), Glycerin, Propanediol, Ethylhexyl Olivate
How It Compares to Dr. Dennis Gross Step 2
Half & Half mimics the hydration and barrier repair of Step 2 — but without the retinol, resveratrol, or CoQ10.
What Prequel does better is ceramides for barrier repair, Peptides for plumping, Amino acids for hydration. What it lacks is Antioxidant punch and Anti-aging actives.
If DDG Step 2 is a “treatment pad,” Half & Half is a “recovery moisturizer.”
The Half and Half moisturizer is $26.00 for 5.7 ounces.
Holiday Skin Prep: Which Combo Wins?
If you want maximum glow + anti-aging: Stick with Dr. Dennis Gross Step 1 + Step 2. It’s the most complete peel system.
If you want gentle resurfacing + hydration: Use Prequel Multi-Acid Milk Peel (wipes or solution) + Half & Half. It’s milky, cushioned, and barrier-friendly.
If you want the closest dupe to DDG Step 1: Prequel’s Multi-Acid Milk Peel Solution is the nearest match — just gentler and more hydrating.
If you want the closest dupe to DDG Step 2: Prequel’s Half & Half comes close in hydration and barrier repair, but lacks the antioxidant/retinol treatment layer.
Which is the best value? That really depends on what your skin care goals are for the whole year not just the holidays. Is convenience important to you?
Other combos – for the same effect
You don’t necessarily need these products to achieve holiday prepped skin. You will need an exfoliant and a good moisturizer. I try to keep all of my products in an average range. However, you may want something for a smaller budget. The Ordinary’s Glycolic Toner is a great option. Along with CeraVe moisturizer as it has ceramides and fats for the skin as well. You may have something in your collection right now.
I would say when you get a chance, you can’t go wrong with either on of these products.
