Unique Pieces
Where are my Trash to Treasure Junkies or want to bees like myself? THIS IS OUR YEAR. The predictions for decorating trends are unique and exclusive decor pieces. You know what that means, get your creative mind going and DIY, revamp, repurpose, and reinvent some decor.
Where to find it – unique and exclusive pieces
For those unique pieces, you will have to stock the thrift stores, Facebook marketplace, Tjmax, Marshalls, garage, or estate sales. Furthermore, those inherited pieces that you weren’t sure what to do with but you kept around. Dust those babies off and start looking for revamping ideas.
Inspiration for your unique and exclusive decor
I like that with Trash to Treasure or Giving New Life, whichever you prefer to call it, are those one-of-a-kind pieces. There are already unique and exclusive pieces that may need some help to make them an interior design work of art. Designing them to be in your home and working with them for yourself gives them a better sense of your style. It is something you can take pride in or at least have a good memory of the work you put into making that item. You can get ideas on blogs, Pinterest, or even posh websites. You know what I mean by posh, ie Pottery Barn, West Elm, Joss & Main, these stores have some amazing items. Shopping there is a delight and the items are well-made and in style, which is why they are copied so much.
Styles you like for your unique decor
Take a stroll through Hobby Lobby, and Target as they may not be trash-to-treasure stores, you can get a good sense of styles you like and what is trending or even materials you would like to use on different items to revamp them. Then when you are thrifting for your items, you will be armed with a sense of how to recreate that item to be a unique decor item for your living space.
For example, flocking was all the rage this year on Christmas ornaments, perhaps you will find some uniquely shaped bouche, for example, a butterfly or bee (or your favorite animal) to adorn a chain or velvet ribbon. Add some flocking to the wings or other accent parts. It will add some dimension and interest. Use it as a bookmark for those coffee tables or bookcase books. Small yes, but exclusively yours, and what an eye-catching piece.
More Flocking for your exclusive decor
Now quite a few people may grab onto this one, because I can see it at Pottery Barn right now. Those knots are paperweights for your coffee table books or bookcases.
Can you not see these things flocked, for a somewhat unique and exclusive look? If you create your own it would be an original. It would be very on-trend.
2nd exclusive
Furthermore, if you find some faux more of the plastic foliage stems that are in good shape but their color has faded. Spray them with some green spray paint. Add some acrylic paint shading and veining on the leaves. There are tons of small pots there grab your favorite and add some self-adhering mirror squares. I have already seen a few people making them. Some use longer mirror stick-on(s) which I like even more.
Accepting your creativity for exclusive decor
Whatever you try to duplicate will not be exactly like the original. Accept it. It isn’t a bad thing, sometimes it works out even better. If you don’t like it, give it some time and try changing it a bit after you have some space and perspective. Even artists and designers take breaks to gain a new perspective on their pieces.
When you go to those thrifty places or Tjmax or Ross, be open to what you find and what you may need to redesign to make them an exclusive piece. But be selective. Even if you have a great idea for what it could be, does it fit into your style or living space? There is where I find trouble, reining it in.
My exclusive vase decor project – First Try
I found this glass ugly green swirl vase for $3.00 on clearance. I liked the shape but the pattern on it was hideous. She came home with me and I dollied her up to what I was looking for in a vase. At first, I sprayed her with Rust-Oleum Textured Spray Paint in Desert Bisque. It wasn’t bad so I left it like that for a while. A long while.
2nd Try
She wasn’t exactly the unique piece I was looking for, so I decided to make her over again. I wanted a kind of old ceramic that was rough with a camel suede color. You know something very unique and exclusive from this vase.
Drywall mud and air-dry clay
I went to work with some drywall mud, it took quite a lot. Creativity is messy, very messy. Put down lots of paper or broken-down cardboard boxes for this step. I also used air-dry clay for the top rim because I wanted more of a bulky square look for the neck of the vase. Furthermore, it would keep its shape better than drywall mud.
I also like those lines in some of the vases I had seen so I attempted that on the fullest part of the vase. Didn’t work out quite like I wanted but I wasn’t too hurt by it either. Sometimes you have to re-evaluate your design. Then, it was on to sealing my “masterpiece”, this was accomplished with good old Elmer’s glue and water. Mixing those two ingredients up and slapped it on there. Okay, I was more careful than slapping it on there, because I didn’t want drips. Altogether I wasn’t that careful with any of it.
Painting my unique and exclusive masterpiece
After it dried, I used several colors of acrylic paint. All in cream, brown, and copper tones. I used a foam brush and then a sponge to paint my colors. It looked like chalk paint. Even though I had sealed in the mud and clay before painting, that drywall mud still came through and mixed up with the paint. I wasn’t mad about that either. After that had dried, which took a long time as well. I sprayed the whole vase with a coat or two of matte spray paint.
I like it. It didn’t turn out exactly like I wanted but it does have the look I was going for in the end.
Trash to Treasure could be a bookcase adornment, a large piece of furniture, or a simple container. You get to choose what you want in your life. You also could get inspired to create something you never thought of or thought you would ever create.
Creating a unique and creative decor item opens up your creative mind, which is very vital at any age.
So, let’s celebrate it!
