Great gardening tool you need to use

Great gardening tool you need to use

As great gardening tools go, this is it. This is a great tool you need to use in your everyday gardening.

Ways to rid your life of weeds

One way of weeding is to spray for weeds which kills some but not all. Or use a strong weed killer that then kills the grass. Weed and feed is another option and it lasts for 2 months but it isn’t foolproof either. What do you do then? Get out there on your hands and knees and pull weeds. Time-consuming task. You could make it easier with a gardening tool. No, I am not referring to that Grandpa’s weeder thing. Don’t get me started on that thing or the garden tool with the rotating spikes. That tool is supposed to just pull everything up as you roll it over the dirt. No, it doesn’t.

Tools

The tool that has worked the best for me is called by some, a Hori Hori Knife, a Japanese gardening knife, or a harvesting knife. There are probably more names, I don’t know. All I know is I love this thing. I want the weeds to come out of the ground easily roots and all. Some are easier than others I will admit. Mother nature made some strong-rooted weeds.

What all of these different types of tools have in common

There are different shapes to these types of gardening tools. The thing that is the same is a divot down the middle of the blade, serrated edge, and knife edge of the blade. Most will also have a V-shaped claw at the end of the blade.

Sides of the gardening tool

Knife side of the gardening tool

I am not an expert with this gardening tool but I have used it for several years. I have used the knife side to get in between landscaping bricks that are more difficult to remove. Cut patches of grass away from landscaping bricks or outdoor landscaping decor. I am sure there are several uses for that side of the blade

The serrated side of the tool

This is used as a small saw for cutting down strong vines and small tree roots. Again, probably more uses that is what I have used it for over the years.

The claw at the end of the knife

I have only used this for picking up thistles after I have dug it out of the ground. It appears that you could use it to dig out the weeds’ roots. I don’t use it for that.

How to use this gardening tool

People probably use this gardening tool in several ways. My main use is to use the tool to dig down in the ground. After I have dug down by the weeds’ roots then I just pop the weed out of the ground. The weed and the roots just all pop out of the ground. Dandelions are some of the easier ones to get out of the ground with roots and all. Creeping Charlies are more difficult but not by much.

I have also used it when planting plants. I dig down in the ground with the knife straight down and then angle it to the side. This makes a hole to plant seeds or plant very small plants into the dirt. As you can tell this is an all-around great gardening tool

Introducing this tool to new homeowners

I recently introduced it to my daughter, she started taking out a whole pile of weeds for her yard. She was using my Fiskars which I have had for several years and it still is in great shape. I went to Target and I was excited to find that they had the tool for only $10.00. Needless to say, I bought two of these tools. One for her and one for me. I want to see the difference between the Fiskars and this one.

So far I don’t see a big difference. The handle is different. I may like the Fiskars better for the handle. Neither handle makes a big difference for me. Oiling the wood handle would help it age better.

Happy Gardening!
